Unveiling Urban Mobility Efficiency

Travel Mode Analysis in Ghent using the University of Helsinki's Travel Time Matrix

As part of the EU H2020 URBANAGE project, we harnessed the Travel Time Matrix (TTM) developed by the University of Helsinki to explore travel mode efficiencies within Ghent, Flanders. Our aim? To paint a clearer picture of urban mobility and to demonstrate an alternative way of visualising travel time.

The TTM forecasts the reach one can achieve from a specific location within the city over time. We took this powerful tool and projected its predictions onto a hexagon grid, a key component in our Flemish URBANAGE cases.

What set this analysis apart was our ability to visualise the travel progression over a 100-minute timeframe using timelapse movies. By repeatedly running the model in 5-minute intervals, we captured the journey for four distinct travel modes: walking, cycling (non-electric), public transport, and driving. These timelapses allowed us to compare the efficiency of each mode, unveiling which method triumphed in navigating the urban landscape.

The results were revealing, showcasing the advantages of particular travel modes in various scenarios. Although the TTM originates from Helsinki, our innovative approach offers valuable insights into urban mobility within Ghent. The question of compatibility between the two cities remains, yet these outcomes provide a promising indication of travel efficiency in our locale.

Curious about the winning travel mode? Catch a glimpse in the movie below!
